Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth, also called “third molars”, typically begin to develop during the early teenage years and often attempt to emerge between ages 16 and 25. For many people, there simply isn’t enough room in the jaw for these teeth to come in properly. When this happens, they get stuck under the gum tissue, so we call these teeth “impacted”. When wisdom teeth are impacted or positioned incorrectly, they can lead to pain, infection, damage to nearby teeth, or other future dental complications.

Even if you aren’t experiencing symptoms, wisdom teeth are often evaluated proactively. Early removal—usually in the mid- to late-teen years—can help prevent problems before they arise and is often associated with an easier recovery. Extraction of wisdom teeth past the age of 25 is associated with longer recovery periods and more complications.

Why wisdom teeth are often removed during the teen years

  • The roots are not fully formed, making extraction less complex

  • Jawbone is less dense, allowing for less work during surgery

  • Lower risk of complications compared to removal later in adulthood

  • Faster recovery and return to school or activities

Common reasons for removal include:

  • Impacted teeth that cannot fully erupt

  • Recurrent gum irritation or infection

  • Risk of cavities due to hard-to-clean positioning

  • Food and debris being trapped around the wisdom tooth

  • Pressure on nearby teeth or orthodontic concerns

  • Prevention of future pain or dental emergencies

What to expect after surgery

  • Swelling and mild discomfort for a few days

  • Temporary jaw stiffness or soreness

  • Most teens return to normal activities within a few days

  • Full healing occurs over several weeks

Potential complications, such as infection or dry socket, are uncommon—especially in younger patients—and are further minimized by following post-operative care instructions. Sedation options are available to ensure optimal comfort during the procedure, and our team closely monitors recovery every step of the way.

Early evaluation and timely treatment allow wisdom teeth removal to be a planned, controlled experience rather than an urgent one later in life.
